Helicopter examines North Holland soil

An innovative helicopter soil survey will start in parts of North Holland from August 15, Map the subsurface to a depth of 200 meters. The survey will take place in the region above the North Sea Canal and will last until the end of 2025. The first flight is planned above the municipalities of Alkmaar and Edam-Volendam.

The research is part of the NL project. This is a collaboration between seven provinces, seven water boards including Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier, five drinking water companies and the research institutes Deltares and TNO - Geological Survey of the Netherlands. The goal is to gain insight into the location of clay layers and the distribution of fresh, brackish and saline groundwater. This information is crucial for sustainable groundwater management, protection of drinking water sources and limiting salinization.

What is happening?

A helicopter flies at an altitude of about 80 meters. About 35 meters below the helicopter hangs a large hoop-shaped sensor. This instrument emits weak electromagnetic signals similar to those from a cell phone. This creates a 3D model of the subsurface. That model shows where fresh or salt groundwater is located and where layers of clay lie. The measurements are safe for humans, animals and nature.

The exact route and time of flight in a given area will be announced at least one day in advancevia www.freshem.nl. Because weather conditions affect the schedule, the flight plan may change at very short notice.

To minimize nuisance to humans and animals, no flights will be conducted over built-up areas or directly above homes and businesses. The research will also be conducted outside the breeding season. Despite these precautions, temporary noise nuisance cannot be completely ruled out.

Surveillance and security

All flights are conducted with the necessary permits and in compliance with legislation, including when flying near natural areas, military installations or nesting sites.
