New Construction of the Kwelvaart Pumping Station

The scale of the farms in the Wieringermeer and the importance of this area for food production continue to grow. For this agricultural production area, the availability of sufficient fresh water is a key prerequisite. Due to climate change, the availability of fresh water will continue to decline in the future. Doing nothing will result in increasing salinization in the Wieringermeer polder, creating increasingly unfavorable conditions for large-scale agricultural operations in this polder. In the Wieringermeer, there are opportunities to redesign the polder so that farmers can be better supplied with sufficient fresh water and a more effective separation of fresh and saltwater can be achieved within the polder.

What's going to happen?

The Hoekvaart pumping station on Medemblikkerweg in Wieringermeer needs to be replaced. It was decided not to renovate the existing pumping station, but to build a new, larger one at a different location.

In the Wieringermeer, several pumping stations work together to drain water from the polder. The Hoekvaart and Slootvaart pumping stations pump the water toward the Leemans pumping station. From there, the water is discharged into the Wadden Sea. By relocating the pumping station and increasing its capacity, we are improving water drainage in the area.

With the new location, we’re also making the water system more future-proof. The location offers opportunities to better separate fresh water from saltier water. This allows us to better retain and utilize the available fresh water.

Where is the project taking place? 

The new location is in Kwelvaart, near the village of Kreileroord (on Oosterterpweg), and will be called the Kwelvaart Pumping Station.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

Construction is expected to begin in Q4 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027.

Who do we work with?

Beentjes GWW Civil Engineering, based in Uitgeest, is constructing the pumping station on behalf of the water board.
