New construction of P. van der Sterr pumping station

What will happen?
In 2025, we will replace P. van der Sterr pumping station on P. van der Sterrweg north of Kolhorn. The current pumping station is at the end of its technical lifespan. A new pumping station with the same capacity of 90m3/min(2x45m3/min) will be built southeast of the existing one.
Current situation
Since the 1940s the Waardpolder has been drained by an electric pumping station. The pumping station stands at the toe of the dike of the Waardkanaal, where the excess polder water is pumped out. The present building has been modified many times. The accessibility with large equipment is moderate and there are many subsidence problems. The structure of the pumping station does not meet current building guidelines. The pump is now 26 years old, parts are not or very poorly available. The pump has reached the end of its lifespan, the pumping station no longer meets the requirements of HHNK on several points and modernization/renovation is necessary and desirable.
Desired situation
With partial renovation of the pumping station, we remain in the cycle of "sticking patches. That is why new construction was chosen. The new pumping station will be built on an undeveloped site just south of the current pumping station. We will immediately make the water system more robust by renovating and adapting some culverts, as well as constructing a substantial new receiving basin. The intervention will also make the HHNK site more attractive in terms of nature and landscape. After the commissioning of the new pumping station, the old pumping station will be demolished.
Where does the project take place?
The pumping station is located at the end of the dead-end P. van der Sterrweg, which is a side road of the Waardpolderhoofdweg.
Who do we work with?
With Landschap Noord-Holland, owner of the adjacent nature reserve, it has been agreed that a kingfisher wall will be placed in the area. Agreements have been made with Archeologie Westfriesland regarding the preservation of the foundation of the old Waard mill on the site.
When will the project take place and how long will it take?
We expect to put the construction of this pumping station, along with the construction of a new Hippolytushoef pumping station, out to tender in the spring of 2025, with construction to be completed in 2026.
