New construction of P. van der Sterr pumping station

What's going to happen?

In 2025, we will replace the P. van der Sterr pumping station on P. van der Sterrweg north of Kolhorn. The current pumping station has reached the end of its technical lifespan. A new pumping station with the same capacity of 90m3/min(2x45m3/min) will be built southeast of the existing one.

Current situation

Since the 1940s, the Waardpolder has been drained by an electric pumping station. The pumping station is located at the foot of the Waardkanaal dike, from which excess polder water is pumped out. The current building has undergone numerous modifications. As a result, accessibility with large equipment is limited and there is significant subsidence. The construction of the drainage system does not comply with current building regulations. The pump is now 26 years old, and parts are either unavailable or very difficult to obtain. The pump has reached the end of its service life, the pumping station no longer meets the requirements of the HHNK (Hollands Hoogwater en Noordzeekanaal) in several respects, and modernization/renovation is necessary and desirable in several areas.

Desired situation

Partial renovation of the pumping station would mean continuing to apply temporary fixes. That is why we opted for new construction. The new pumping station will be built on a vacant lot slightly south of the current pumping station. We will immediately make the water system more robust by renovating and modifying a number of culverts and constructing a large new receiving basin. The intervention will also make the HHNK site more attractive in terms of nature and landscape. Once the new pumping station is operational, the old pumping station will be demolished.

Where is the project taking place?

The pumping station is located at the end of the dead-end P. van der Sterrweg, which is a side road of the Waardpolderhoofdweg.

Who do we work with?

Contractor Beentjes Grond- Weg en Waterbouw from Uitgeest is building the pumping station on behalf of the water board.

An agreement has been reached with Landschap Noord-Holland, owner of the adjacent nature reserve, to install a kingfisher wall in the area. Agreements have been made with archaeology regarding the conservation of the foundations of the old Waardmolen mill on the site.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

We expect to start construction of this pumping station, together with that of a newHippolytushoef pumping station on Wieringen, in mid-2025, with construction scheduled for completion at the end of 2026.
