Improving buoy dike Broekermeerdijk

What will happen?

HHNK ensures safe dikes in the management area between North Sea Canal and Texel. We regularly check whether the dikes are still safe. Because of more extreme weather conditions, the checks and requirements for this have been tightened. The test showed that the Broekermeerdijk (and Kanaaldijk from the N235 viaduct) did not meet the requirements for height and strength. Therefore, it must be reinforced.

Where does the project take place?

It concerns the Broekermeerdijk (and Kanaaldijk from the N235 viaduct) in the municipality of Waterland.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?

Last year, a first design was presented to, among others, residents affected by the dyke reinforcement. However, the groundwater level turned out to be different from the normative water level used in the calculations. In the fall of 2023, we installed monitoring wells at various locations to monitor the groundwater levels in the dike. We measured groundwater levels for a year to gain insight into groundwater fluctuation. Additional soil investigations were also carried out to gain an even better understanding of the subsurface structure of the dike. The results of both studies were used to recalculate the stability of the Broekermeer dike. The results of the additional research are favorable for the stability. In a very wet period (between autumn of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024), the measured groundwater levels became lower than those calculated in the original test. A lower groundwater level is favorable for the (inward) stability of the dike (in a situation with a lot of rain and relatively high water). After performing a new calculation, it appeared that the (inward) stability of the dike is sufficient at most locations. The owners of the relevant plots of land have since been informed personally. The locations where there is still an (inward) stability issue are outlined below:

At these locations, all owned by HHNK, a layer of soil (clay or dried-up dredged material) will be applied to the existing lower berm on the polder side. Implementation is expected to take place in the fall of 2026. We will make every effort to keep inconvenience to a minimum, although we obviously cannot prevent trucks from driving around at the time of implementation. On this page you can read in due course when the exact implementation will take place.

Who do we work with?

HHNK is the client for the dike improvement. Municipality of Waterland is involved in the work. The Province of North Holland is the owner of the sheet piling along the outlet and replaced the section between Het Schouw and the Drievaart this year. If you live along this stretch or your business is located here, you have been informed by the Province of North Holland.
