Improvement of the Mijzenpolder embankment
Parts of the embankments around the Mijzenpolder have been rejected and need to be improved. The company JP Schilder BV from Ursem will start work on Monday, October 20, and expects to complete the work in January 2026, depending on the weather. The water board will ensure that the embankment meets safety requirements for the next 20 to 30 years.
What's going to happen?

The problem with the Mijzenpolderdijk is that it is 'inwardly unstable' in some places. This means that there is too much risk that the dike could slide toward the polder when the water level in the ring canal is high and there is heavy rainfall. The most obvious solution is to make the inner side of the dike less steep and widen the support berm by adding soil. This is not always possible because there are buildings relatively close to the dike. In those places, we make the dike more stable by raising the inner berm. We install revetments at homes northeast of Schermerhorn and along the reservoir on the north side of the Mijzenpolder.
Who do we work with?
In the summer of 2025, the work was contracted to JP Schilder BV from Ursem, which will carry out the work together with Roelofsen Machineverhuur en Grondwerken BV and Heicombinatie SPS. The road will remain accessible as much as possible during the work. Where residents, owners, and other parties involved in the project area may be affected, discussions have been held to find the best possible solution for the area.
We are making agreements with the municipalities of Koggenland and Alkmaar to prevent traffic disruption during the execution of the work.
Where is the project taking place?
The section to be improved runs around the Mijzenpolder.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?
Permits for the project were granted in the spring of 2024 by the water board (licence ) and the municipalities of Koggenland and Alkmaar (environmental permit).
The work will take place from October 20, 2025, until January 2026 (depending on weather conditions).
