Improvement of inlet dike Mijzenpolder
Parts of the buoy dikes around the Mijzenpolder have failed and must be improved. The company JP Schilder BV from Ursem will start work on Monday, October 20, and expects - depending on the weather - to complete the work in January 2026. The high water board will ensure that the quay again meets the safety requirements for the next 20 to 30 years.
What will happen?

The problem with the Mijzenpolderdijk is that it is 'inwardly unstable' in some places. This means that there is too much risk that the dike could slide off in the direction of the polder during high storage basin water and heavy rainfall. The most obvious solution is to make the dike more slender on the inside and to widen the support verge by adding soil. This is not always possible because there are buildings relatively close to the dike. In those places we will make the dike more stable by raising the inner shoulder. At homes northeast of Schermerhorn and along the polder on the north side of the Mijzenpolder we will install sheet piling.
Who do we work with?
In the summer of 2025, the work was tendered to JP Schilder BV of Ursem, which will perform the work together with Roelofsen Machineverhuur en Grondwerken BV and Heicombinatie SPS. During the work, the road will remain accessible as much as possible. Where the interests of residents, owners and other parties involved in the project area could be affected, discussions have been held to find the best possible way of fitting in with the area.
We make arrangements with the municipalities of Koggenland and Alkmaar to prevent traffic congestion during the execution of the work.
Where does the project take place?
The route to be improved runs around the Mijzenpolder.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?
Permits for the project were granted in spring 2024, by the district water board (Water Act permit) and the municipalities of Koggenland and Alkmaar (environmental permit).
The work will last from Oct. 20, 2025 and (weather permitting) through January 2026.
