Improving storage basin dike Wilmkebreekpolder

Part of the polder dike around the Wilmkebreekpolder has failed and needs to be improved. We will ensure that the quay once again meets the safety requirements for the next 20 to 30 years.

What will happen?

The problem of the Wilmkebreekpolder is threefold. The dike is 'inwardly unstable' in some places. This means that there is too great a risk that the dike could slide off in the direction of the polder during high storage basin water combined with heavy rainfall.
In addition, the dike has become too low over time, so that water can flow over the dike during high water.
Finally, the crest/top of the dike has become increasingly narrow due to erosion, so that it has almost disappeared in some places.

To solve this, the dike will be raised at the crest and on the inner shoulder. In addition, shoring will be installed along the dike.

Who do we work with?

The project will have little effect on the surrounding area. The road will remain accessible during the work. Where residents, owners and others whose interests may be affected by the project area, discussions have been held in search of the best possible integration into the area.

We made arrangements with the City of Amsterdam regarding required permits and the prevention of traffic congestion during the work.

Where does the project take place?

The section to be improved is located on the south side of the Wilmkebreekpolder.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?

In March 2025 we will carry out some preparatory work such as cutting down the trees in the way of the water barrier. Around summer 2025 the actual embankment raising will be carried out, this will take several months.
