Callantsoog water system improvements.
The climate is changing, longer dry periods alternate with extreme rain showers. In the weekend of June 18-19-20, 2021, the area Callantsoog, the Zijpe, the Sammerspolder, the Baafjespolder and Egmondermeer (an area of 50 by 10 km) was hit by extreme precipitation. More than 100 mm and locally as much as 140 mm fell. The predicted precipitation was still localized and moderate until shortly before the storm. Therefore, the intensity and magnitude of the showers and the subsequent nuisance came as a surprise. With the improvement works, we can better control water flooding situations in the future.

What will happen?
We have started preparing to improve the water system so that a water overflow situation like the end of June 2021 can be better managed and excess rainwater can be drained more quickly.
In many places the water in the ditches rose to ground level and water remained between crops on the land. In Callantsoog, the Zijpe, the Sammerspolder, the Baafjespolder and Egmondermeer, the flooding was at its greatest. The evaluation showed, among other things, that pumping station Koetensluis in the Callantsoog polder was not working properly. The culverts in the last section of the water supply along Zijperdijk caused too much resistance.
Culverts replaced along Zijper dike
To improve the supply of water along the Zijperdijk to the Koetensluis pumping station, we are going to replace six dams with culverts that are too small and partly in poor condition.

Diver with weir at Zijperdijk/Uitlandseweg/Westerweg intersection
To improve water management at the Zijperdijk/Uitlandseweg/Westerweg junction, the overflow box with culvert now in the middle of the watercourse will be removed. A new culvert with automated valve weir will be constructed under Uitlandseweg between the high water level and the lower main watercourse to Koetensluis pumping station. This solution will provide a direct discharge of water in the correct direction to Koetensluis pumping station.

Culverts under and along the Voorweg
To improve the flow of water under and along the west side of the Voorweg to the Rechtendijk pumping station, we are replacing two culverts that are too small and too high.

Swanwater barrier with slide
In the Zwanenwater nature reserve south of the Zuidschinkeldijk (N502) a wooden sheet pile dam with slide valve is leaking and in need of replacement. During a situation of flooding or calamity, the slide in the sheet piling is poorly accessible to an area manager. The solution, replace the slide, automate it and control it with solar power.

Where does the project take place?
The project is located west of the Zijperdijk and north of the Zwanenwater in the Callantsoog polder in the municipality of Schagen.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?
Work will begin in early 2025 and last until the end of 2025.
Who do we work with?

We are working with local farmers, Natuurmonumenten, the municipality of Schagen and the Province of North Holland.
This project is co-funded by the European Union.
