Improvements to the Callantsoog water system
The climate is changing, with longer dry periods alternating with extreme rainfall. During the weekend of June 18-19-20, 2021, the area of Callantsoog, De Zijpe, De Sammerspolder, De Baafjespolder, and Egmondermeer (an area measuring 50 by 10 km) was hit by extreme rainfall. More than 100 mm of rain fell, with up to 140 mm in some places. Until shortly before the storm, the forecast precipitation was local and moderate. As a result, the intensity and extent of the storms and the subsequent disruption came as a surprise. The improvement works will enable us to better manage flooding situations in the future.

What's going to happen?
We have started preparations to improve the water system so that flooding situations such as the one at the end of June 2021 can be better managed and excess rainwater can be drained away more quickly.
In many places, the water in the ditches rose to ground level and remained standing between the crops on the land. The flooding was worst in Callantsoog, Zijpe, Sammerspolder, Baafjespolder, and Egmondermeer. The evaluation showed, among other things, that the Koetensluis pumping station in the Callantsoog polder was not working properly. The culverts in the last section of the water supply along the Zijperdijk caused too much resistance.
Divers replaced along the Zijperdijk
To improve the water supply along the Zijperdijk to the Koetensluis pumping station, we are replacing six dams that are too small and partly in poor condition with culverts.

Culvert with weir at the intersection of Zijperdijk/Uitlandseweg/Westerweg
To improve water management at the Zijperdijk/Uitlandseweg/Westerweg intersection, the overflow basin with culvert currently located in the middle of the watercourse will be removed. A new culvert will be constructed under Uitlandseweg with an automated valve between the high water level and the lower main watercourse to the Koetensluis pumping station. This solution will ensure that the water is discharged directly in the right direction to the Koetensluis pumping station.

Divers under and along the Voorweg
To improve the water supply under and along the west side of Voorweg to the Rechtendijk pumping station, we are replacing two culverts that are too small and too high.

Sluice gate with slide Zwanenwater
In the Zwanenwater nature reserve south of the Zuidschinkeldijk (N502), a wooden sheet pile wall with a slide gate is leaking and needs to be replaced. During flooding or emergencies, the slide gate in the sheet pile wall is difficult for area managers to access. The solution is to replace the slide gate, automate it, and control it using solar power.

Where is the project taking place?
The project is located west of the Zijperdijk and north of the Zwanenwater in the Callantsoog polder in the municipality of Schagen.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?
Work will commence in early 2025 and continue until the end of 2025.
Who do we work with?

We work together with local farmers, Natuurmonumenten, the municipality of Schagen, and the Province of North Holland.
This project is co-financed by the European Union.
