Vision on the wastewater chain

Clean water, now and in the future

We treat wastewater from residents and businesses on a daily basis. In this way, we ensure clean water and a healthy living environment, and contribute to public health.

We not only purify water, but also recover energy and raw materials. We are constantly modernizing our treatment plants. After all, our plants must continue to operate day and night. When it comes to maintenance and renewal, we opt for the most effective, sustainable, and circular solutions.

The world around us is changing rapidly. Climate change and population and industrial growth mean we have to treat more wastewater. In addition, society is placing higher demands on water quality. We therefore need to improve our treatment processes, for example to remove micro-pollutants and pharmaceutical residues. This requires a major step forward: a new way of working together and treating wastewater. We call this 'The Great Renovation of the Water Chain', a challenge that will keep us busy for decades to come.

We do not devise and implement changes on our own. We collaborate with partners, knowledge institutions, and companies. We also utilize smart data. We work together to develop our common principle: "what does not go in does not have to come out."

Water Chain Partnership Noorderkwartier

In the Waterketen Noorderkwartier partnership, 27 municipalities, the water board, and drinking water company PWN are working to realize the ambitions set out in administrative agreements. This involves the joint efficient management of the existing water chain.

Our wastewater system was established in the last century. Since then, there have been many developments and challenges that need to be addressed. These include replacing and expanding existing installations, but also the desire to operate in a climate- and energy-neutral manner and to recover as many raw materials as possible.
