Why elections?

He who pays the piper calls the tune

The water board has a democratically elected board of directors. Since 2015, water board elections have been held concurrently with provincial council elections. These elections take place every four years. The next election will be held on March 17, 2027. Water boards ensure safe dikes and an adequate supply of clean water. These are matters of vital importance to our country. That is why we have water boards, with their own tax and their own board of directors. Because you pay the water board tax, you also have a say, through the elected board members, in how that money is spent. How clean should surface water be? How do we prevent flooding, waterlogging, and drought as the climate changes? These are the kinds of issues our board addresses. These are important issues that you can influence by voting in the water board elections.

General management

The role of the general board is to establish strategic policy and financial frameworks, to elect an executive board, and to ensure that the executive board is implementing the policy properly. The members of the executive board are also members of the general board. This is different at the provincial and municipal levels: a member of the Municipal Executive or the Provincial Executive may not simultaneously be a member of the municipal council or the Provincial Council.

Ourgeneral boardconsists of 30 members. Twenty-six of them represent the general interests. After all, all residents of our area benefit from what we do. These 26 members are elected during the water board elections.

Two members are appointed by LTO Noord (on behalf of farmers) and two members are appointed by the Association of Forest and Nature Area Owners (on behalf of land managers). These are the reserved seats. These numbers are determined by the province and set forth in our Board Regulations.
