Schoolyard flooding
The teaching materials were developed for 2nd grade high school HAVO and VWO students, with the goal of making students aware of how the water system in their own area is designed and what problems can occur when a downpour occurs. Students also learn what measures municipalities and residents can take to reduce the chance of flooding.
Nearby
The schoolyard flooding module makes extensive use of local examples. For example, students watch a video of flooding near Beverwijk during the 2014 downpour and look at examples of measures taken in North Holland to reduce flooding. Using a map application, students look at what happens when a downpour hits their own area: Where does water stay in the streets? Are there houses where water can enter? Which roads are still accessible?
Works
The lesson module is unique in that it consists of a variety of work formats, including a water quiz, water experiments, fieldwork with a collector app and a decorating assignment. This involves students looking at how they can "water-proof" their own environment.
Both teachers and students are very enthusiastic about the learning module. Students find the working methods fun and useful, and indicate that they have learned a lot about water issues in their own environment.
