Who is eligible to vote in the election?

Political parties (associations or foundations) may participate in the elections.

These may include, for example, organizations that advocate for specific interests, such as the protection of flora and fauna or the interests of recreational water sports enthusiasts. However, they may also be general political parties. If a party wishes to participate in the elections under a specific name (“designation”), it must register this name with the water board’s central election committee. This designation will appear at the top of the list of candidates on the ballot.

Blank list

Registration of a party name is not required. A party may also choose to participate in the water board elections using a so-called blank list. In that case, only a number appears at the top of the party’s candidate list on the ballot, and no name.

Impact of the House of Representatives' register

Designations registered with the Electoral Council for the House of Representatives elections also apply to the water board elections. This means that, in these cases, no separate registration of the designation is required with the water board’s central election committee. When is the registration deadline?

Your registration request must be received by the Central Election Commission no later than the 42nd day prior to the nomination deadline for the upcoming elections. This also applies to the security deposit (see below). The nomination deadline is February 1, 2027. This means that yourregistration request must be submitted to no later than December 21, 2026.

Required documents for registration

Please include the following documents with your registration request:

  1. notarial deed (copy) setting out the articles of association of the political group and demonstrating that political activities are carried out in some way. The political group must be an association with full legal capacity or a foundation;
  2. proof of payment of the security deposit to the central election commission;
  3. statement of the appointment of an authorized representative and a substitute authorized representative. This statement is part of the registration form.

Security deposit

The registration deposit is €225. This amount must be transferred to account number NL16 NWAB 0636 7539 99 in the name of the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board, with the reference “election registration deposit.” After payment, you will receive a payment receipt. The deposit will be refunded if your group submits a valid list of candidates for the upcoming election. The deposit will be refunded to the bank account from which it was paid.
