Become a water board member

Who decides how we protect ourselves against drought, extreme rainfall, and rising sea levels? On March 17, 2027, the Netherlands will elect new water board members—people who will set the course for safe, clean, and sufficient water, both now and in the future. The Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board is looking for committed and motivated candidates who wish to run in the water board elections.

To give interested parties a clear picture of what the work of a general director entails, we are organizing several information sessions on May 19, June 4, and June 23. Participants will learn exactly what the role requires, as well as how a director can truly make a difference, contribute to important decisions regarding water management in the region, and help determine how we address issues such as climate change. There are then several options:

  • Running for a guaranteed seat
  • Joining an existing political party
  • Running in the water board elections with your own slate

The water board ensures that we can live, work, and enjoy recreational activities safely below sea level. At the same time, the changing climate presents us with ever-greater challenges. How do we keep our region livable? How do we make choices that bring together water management, sustainability, energy, and the environment? Dike Reeve Remco Bosma says: “The water board concerns us all. That is precisely why we need people who want to have a say. With your participation today, you are helping determine how we keep the Netherlands safe, clean, and livable in the future.”
