Construction of fish passage at Stontelerkeersluis

In the northern part of North Holland, HHNK is improving fish migration and the recovery of fish species that live in both fresh and salt water. This also improves the future-proofing and manageability of the water system.

What's going to happen?

The Stontelerkeersluis fish passage is one of the measures being implemented as part of the'Improvement of Wet Infrastructure in Noordkop' project (known as the Noordkop project for short). The aim of the Noordkop project is to improve fish migration and restore populations of diadromous fish species (fish species that migrate between fresh and salt water) and estuarine species (fish species that live in brackish water) in the northern part of North Holland, as well as to increase the value of the Amstelmeer for wading birds. The project also improves the future-proofing and manageability of the water system, which is important for other functions in the area, such as agriculture.

The Stontelerkeersluis lock is the gateway for fish from the IJsselmeer to the Amstelmeerboezem. However, the current lock is not sufficiently passable for fish. The construction of a fish passage will also open up the Amstelmeerboezem to diadromous fish via the IJsselmeer. This will make even better use of the area for fish and will also allow fish that enter the IJsselmeer via the Afsluitdijk, for example, to use the area. In addition, fish that enter at Oostoever and migrate over long distances will be able to reach the IJsselmeer.

Where is the project taking place?

The Stontelerkeersluis is located on Stontelerweg in Den Oever.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

As things stand at present, work will start in mid-March 2026 and continue until mid-July 2026. Stakeholders will be informed in writing of the final schedule in advance.

Who do we work with?

The fish passage is being constructed by K_Dekker bouw & infra.

We are making agreements with the municipality of Hollands Kroon about the necessary traffic measures. Coordination with the cable and pipeline operators took place during the preparation of the project.
