Glossary of Terms Water Register
Dredging
Removing excessive silt deposits that hinder or could hinder the discharge, supply, or storage of water. The aim is to safeguard the standard supply and/or discharge of water and to ensure that the profile of the waterways meets the minimum required dimensions.
Salvage area
An area designated for hydraulic engineering purposes under the Spatial Planning Act (from January 1, 2021: under the Omgevingswet), not being a surface water body or part thereof, which serves to increase the storage capacity of one or more water systems and is also listed as a storage area in the register.
Protection zone
An area adjacent to a water management structure, in which regulations and restrictions may apply for the protection of that structure, as laid down in the water board's regulations.
Basic Registration of Large-Scale Topography (BGT)
The BGT is an important part of the system of basic registrations. Basic registrations enable data to be collected once and used multiple times. By storing the data in the BGT in an unambiguous manner, it can be reused by all government organizations that need this data. The water board is the source holder for, among other things, the waters and flood defenses. The BGT replaces the Large-scale Basic Map of the Netherlands (GBKN).
Base width
The width of the soil at the soil height to be maintained and the desired slopes.
Floor height
The required ground level relative to NAP, which, in combination with the water level specified in the water level decision, determines the minimum water depth required for the supply and/or discharge of water.
Extraordinary maintenance
Maintenance of waterways in accordance with the provisions of the register regarding direction, shape, dimensions, and construction.
Category
A classification of waters based on the surface area to be supplied and/or drained and/or based on the storage function. Three categories of systems are distinguished, namely primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Regular maintenance dry
Proper maintenance of the banks and embankments, as well as the associated bank protection works, insofar as this is necessary to prevent subsidence or erosion from hindering the discharge, supply, or storage of water, or to prevent subsidence from threatening constructed maintenance strips or fences. For maintenance of the embankment, it may be necessary to pull the subsided embankment out of the water. Removal of vegetation and overhanging branches.
Regular wet maintenance
Cleaning and mowing the wet profile of the water to the water's edge by removing vegetation and materials from the water. For waters wider than 6 metre located in the secondary system, maintenance of the shore zone up to 3 metre the water is part of regular dry maintenance.
Insertion height
The height at the intersection of the sloping bank (bank slope) and the horizontal ground level. Expressed as height relative to the bottom of the ditch (depth relative to ground level) or relative to NAP.
Hydrovak / hydro object
Division of a surface water body based on consistent and homogeneous characteristics that are distinguished within a surface water body.
Artwork
Civil engineering work for the infrastructure of roads, waterways, railways, flood defenses, and/or pipelines not intended for permanent human habitation.
Artwork compartment
A hydropower plant that consists (almost) entirely of a work of art. Dimensions and maintenance requirements are specified for the work of art.
Ground level
Elevation of the ground surface in an area, excluding embankments and verges or other (artificial) elevations or depressions;
Maintenance obligation
The manner in which responsibility for the maintenance of surface water bodies, storage areas, and engineering structures is laid down in the register. Who is responsible (maintenance obligation) for carrying out (or arranging for the carrying out of) which maintenance work (maintenance obligation).
Maintenance obligation
Natural or legal person responsible for the maintenance of waterworks. Maintenance obligation Liability for the maintenance of waterworks managed by the water board, as specified in the register or in regulations governing exemptions.
Surface water body
A coherent whole consisting of water occurring freely on the earth's surface, with the substances present therein, as well as the associated soil, banks and, insofar as expressly designated under the Water Act, drier bank areas, as well as the flora and fauna.
Water level regulating structure
Structure for regulating the water level.
Level-determining structures
Artwork for separating two different water levels.
Primary system
System of waterways that are important for the supply and drainage of water and water storage at regional and polder level.
Profile
An imaginary cross-section of a surface water body, shown schematically. Divided into a dry and wet part, separated by the water level.
Pseudovak
A hydrovak that serves only to connect to other hydrovaks. Dimensions and maintenance requirements are specified in the adjacent hydrovak.
Secondary system
System of water bodies that are important for the supply and drainage of water and water storage at plot level. Water bodies that do not belong to the primary system are part of the secondary system unless they are designated in the register as part of the tertiary system.
Slope
The lateral boundary between the waterbed and ground level (the sloping surface). The angle of inclination of the slope is expressed as a height relative to the construction width. The location of the
left or right slope is determined by looking at the cross-section of the surface water body downstream.
Tertiary system
System of water bodies whose main function is water storage. Water bodies can be part of the tertiary system if they are not of major importance for supply/drainage.
Water depth
Vertical distance between water level and water bottom.
Waterfront / water's edge
The boundary line between water and shore.
Water level / waterline
The interface between water and air.
Water management
Surface water body, storage area, flood barrier, supporting structure
