Three tips for the Christmas holidays

The Christmas holidays are just around the corner. We understand that the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve can feel like years. To kill time, you could watch Home Alone for the86th time. But if you're ready for something new, keep reading. In this article, we have three holiday tips!

The Dutch Water Museum

The Netherlands and water are inextricably linked. We livewithwater, but we have also been fighting it for centuries. This constant tension shapes not only our coastline and landscape, but also our society, our technology, and our self-image.

The exhibition 'Water Heroes of Yesteryear' focuses on the forgotten icons of hydraulic engineering. Not only the famous names, but especially the women, the seasonal workers, the peat cutters, the dredgers, the dike workers — the thousands of people who stood with their feet in the clay. They made the great waterworks of the Netherlands possible, but disappeared from the history books. This exhibition gives them back their place in the story of the Netherlands.

The icing on the cake

During the Christmas holidays, there is a special children's program where children can create a new piece of the Netherlands! There is an additional charge of €2.50 per child for the Water Lab.

Visit the exhibition ‘Polderen’

An exhibition is being held at the Zaans Museum until May 3. The exhibition raises urgent questions.

Polderen shows the role that history can play in raising awareness of the present. The exhibition tells the stories of various polder residents. It focuses on the farmers, engineers, and nature lovers who all played a pioneering role, enabling us to live in this place today.

HHNK has loaned various objects for this exhibition. The tour of the exhibition beautifully demonstrates how HHNK's water heritage can be used to convey an urgent message. Don't miss it!

Visit De Dog windmill

On Sunday, December 28, De Dog windmill in Uitgeest will open its doors for a unique evening opening. Between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., you can enjoy the windmill in an atmospheric setting and learn more about the craft and history while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea.

The miller is organizing this with great enthusiasm and hopes to welcome as many visitors as possible. It's a great opportunity to do something fun with colleagues, friends, or family during the holidays!

Did you know that De Dog windmill was built in 1896 to drain the Castricummerpolder after its predecessor burned down due to a lightning strike? Two of the miller's daughters lost their lives in that disaster, a tragic event that led to the construction of a new windmill and a separate miller's house. De Dog is a national monument and still operates regularly on a voluntary basis.
