HHNK deploys drones for drought inspection
After several sunny, dry days, the precipitation deficit in the Netherlands has increased further. In Hollands Noorderkwartier, there is a precipitation deficit of 225 mm. This is the difference between expected evaporation and measured precipitation. Nationally, the precipitation deficit is 247 mm. The top layer of dikes in our area is drier than usual in summer periods. At the IJsselmeerdijk and Zuiderdijk, cracks have been observed by our employees that need further investigation. The dikes are safe, but we are monitoring these locations to get a better picture of the extent of the damage. A drone will be used to take pictures of the dikes to capture cracks and compare them to previous measurements. The drone will fly over the IJsselmeerdijk near Schardam over the next few days. In addition to drought cracks as are more common in these conditions, the dikes look good.
Sunny and dry weather is still expected next week. Therefore, we remain alert for drought conditions. Our employees in the field keep a close eye on whether drought causes damage to dikes. We adjust the water level in ditches and lakes where necessary and possible. Thanks to the water supply from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes, there is currently sufficient fresh water available in our area.
