Open house about new nature in Zuurvenspolder
The Zuurvenspolder in Bergen is getting a new layout. This presents opportunities for a stronger water system, more nature, and better recreational opportunities. You are welcome to attend on Thursday, March 19, to learn about the plans and contribute your ideas about the development of recreational opportunities in the area.
During the open evening, the province of North Holland, the municipality of Bergen, Landschap Noord-Holland, the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board, and Stichting Zuurvenspolder will talk about their plans for the polder.
Nature
The Zuurvenspolder will become an important link in the Dutch Nature Network (NNN). The area is unique due to the variation between wet and dry areas and clay, peat, and sandy soils, which provide a habitat for many different plant and animal species. The NNN is a network of interconnected nature reserves in the Netherlands. Biodiversity in the polder will be increased by creating flower-rich, moist hay meadows and developing dry grasslands full of herbs.
Water
Smart water management prevents flooding. This can be achieved, for example, by collecting extra water in the polder during heavy rainfall, or by using natural solutions such as waterways that retain water. To improve water quality, the possibilities for constructing nature-friendly banks are being investigated. In this way, we are improving water quality in the polder and keeping the environment safe and dry, even when extreme rainfall occurs more frequently.
Recreation
How can we make the polder more attractive to walkers and nature lovers, while taking nature into account? Think in particular about the construction of new walking trails. Your opinion on this will be taken into account in the further development of the plan for how the polder will be laid out.
Next steps
The open house on March 19 is intended to share the initial plans for nature, water, and recreation and to gather ideas. In the meantime, the province will continue to work with the parties involved to develop the layout plan. Another open house will be held in September. By then, the layout of the area will be known in more detail, and we will be able to show you the finalized plans.
