Pupils from Hoorn and Andijk make water journal
Over 70 students from grades 6 and 7 made a water journal on the dike in Hoorn in recent weeks. The reason is the dike reinforcement near Hoorn. The water journal focuses on history, the dike reinforcement of the Markermeer dikes and how to stimulate biodiversity on the dike.
The film project Waterland is a heritage, film education project that deals with our surrounding water and dikes. The role the dikes played in World War II will be discussed. In fact, it was 80 years ago that the dikes were used as a weapon both by the Germans and the Allies. However, the Germans destroyed by far the most dikes, as a defense mechanism. This monumental dike survived the violence of war.
The present and the future are discussed in the item on the current relevance of the dike reinforcement by HHNK. We are making the dikes safe again for the next 50 years! Among other things, embankments are being constructed and dikes are being widened. The plants on the dikes also provide reinforcement.
Awareness
Prior to filming on the dike, the students received a guest lesson. This lesson explored why dikes played an important role in the freedom we have today during the war. And also: why do we need dikes? What was the function in the past and what is it now? What types of dikes do you all have and what does a dike consist of and how does the Water Board take care of biodiversity on the dike?
Students give a cinematic response to this after learning from experts from various disciplines. They give their own opinions on freedom and safety regarding the levees in a water journal.
The water news workshop is a collaboration between JETSET for Film Education and the Water Board to increase water awareness among students.
