New Hippolytushoef pumping station

What's going to happen?

In 2025, we will replace the Hippolytushoef pumping station on Lonjeweg, south of Hippolytushoef. The current pumping station, which dates from 1929 (the pumps were replaced in 1972), has reached the end of its technical lifespan. A new pumping station with the same capacity of 80m3/minute(2x40m3/min.) will be built east of the existing pumping station.

Current situation

The Hippolytushoeverkoog originally had its own mill. In 1893, this mill was in poor condition, so it was decided to connect the koog to the Waard Nieuwland polder via a culvert and to use the drainage system of this polder. When the island was to be connected to the electricity grid in the fall of 1920, it was decided to have an electric pumping station built. This plan was delayed due to the very high costs of laying a power cable. With the Zuiderzee Works, the power supply was no longer a problem and on April 27, 1928, it was decided to build an electric pumping station. The new pumping station was equipped with two vertical screw pumps and had a capacity of 70m3 per minute.

After a large-scale renovation and upgrade to a capacity of80m3 per minute in 1972, the pumping station is now in need of renovation again.

Desired situation

The pumping station has reached the end of its technical lifespan. That is why the decision was made to build a new one. Given the limited space between the water and the monumental Wierdijk, it is necessary to demolish the old building. This will keep the site accessible for maintenance equipment and an emergency pump.

Where is the project taking place?

The pumping station is located at the end of the dead-end Lonjeweg road, next to the monumental Wierdijk.

Who do we work with?

Contractor Beentjes Grond- Weg en Waterbouw from Uitgeest is building the pumping station on behalf of the water board.

The Province of North Holland has been consulted on how this project can best be integrated into the monumental surroundings. Together with Staatsbosbeheer (the Dutch Forestry Commission), discussions have been held on how to take into account the presence of a rare plant in the area, the slender thistle.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

We expect to start construction of this pumping station, together with that of the new P. van der Sterr pumping station in the Waardpolder, in mid-2025, with construction due to be completed in 2026.
