New construction of Hippolytushoef pumping station

What will happen?

In 2025 we will replace pumping station Hippolytushoef on Lonjeweg south of Hippolytushoef. The current pumping station from the year 1929 (pumps were replaced in 1972) is at the end of its technical lifespan. A new pumping station with the same capacity of 80m3/minute(2x40m3/min.) will be built east of the existing pumping station.

Current situation

The Hippolytushoeverkoog originally had its own mill. This was in poor condition in 1893, after which it was decided to connect the koog to the Waard Nieuwland polder via a culvert and to make use of the drainage of this polder. When the island was to be connected to the electricity grid in the fall of 1920, it was decided to have an electric pumping station built. This intention was delayed because of the very high cost of laying a power cable. With the Zuiderzee Works, power supply was no longer a problem, and on April 27, 1928, it was decided to build an electric pumping station. The new pumping station was equipped with two vertical screw pumps, and had a capacity of 70m3 per minute.

After a large-scale renovation and upgrade to a capacity of 80m3 per minute in 1972, the pumping station is now in need of renovation again.

Desired situation

The pumping station is at the end of its technical lifespan. That is why new construction was chosen. Given the limited space between the water and the monumental Wierdijk, it is necessary to demolish the old building. This leaves the site accessible for maintenance equipment and an emergency pump.

Where does the project take place?

The pumping station is located at the end of the dead-end Lonjeweg against the monumental Wierdijk.

Who do we work with?

It was agreed with the Province of North Holland how best to fit this project into the monumental surroundings. Together with the Forestry Commission we discussed how to take into account the presence of a rare plant in the area, the Tengere Thistle.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?

We expect to put the construction of this pumping station, along with that of a new P. van der Sterr pumping station in the Waardpolder, out to tender in the spring of 2025, with construction to be completed in 2026.
