Water safety tips
Ready for water together!
That sounds great, of course, but how can we work together to ensure that we live and work as safely as possible below sea level? What are we doing, and what can you do yourself?
Check out the tips below!
Tip 1: Put together an emergency kit
This will ensure you are prepared for (unexpected) emergencies. Think of bottles of water, non-perishable food, candles, waterproof matches, and a thermal blanket. Also, make sure you have a whistle to let rescue workers know where you are. Ideally, you should also have a charged power bank so you can keep using your phone for as long as possible.
What you and your family members need is personal. Think about it and prepare yourself. It is best to store the emergency kit on a higher floor where you can go if the water rises.
Tip 2: Check overstroom.nl
Find out how high the water will rise in your home during a flood. Then think about what you will need when the time comes. And who/what will you take with you to the attic?

Tip 3: Ensure your gutters are clean
A clogged gutter due to leaves or other debris can cause water damage. Be sure to clean your gutter at least once a year.

Tip 4: Ensure the ditch is clean
Ensure that any ditch bordering your property is kept clean. How do you maintain your ditch? Visit hhnk.nl/schouw for more information.

Tip 5: Create a water barrier
When it rains heavily, there is a greater risk of flooding. Water can then flow into your home. A water barrier ensures that no water can flow into the house. You place it in front of passageways such as doors before flooding occurs. A barrier can be a tightly fitting board that fits exactly into your doorway.

Tip 6: Use sandbags
If there is a risk of flooding, you can place sandbags at openings such as doors. Also use partitions or plastic, otherwise the water will get through the sandbags.
