Safe, clean, sufficient

Together we keep the water clean

In summer, many people enjoy activities in and on the water in North Holland, such as canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, and boating. Our 15 modern sewage treatment plants purify all the dirty water from your toilet, sink, or shower. It then flows into the ditches in a cleaner state.

Clean and healthy water

People are often unaware of the importance of water and the impact of behaviour water quality. This summer, we want to raise awareness and offer tips on how you can contribute to clean and healthy water. Flooding is very noticeable. Water quality is less visible but important for our health and for flora and fauna.

For example, do not use poison neighbourhood water, use water sparingly, do not flush waste (such as grease, wipes, tampons, and contact lenses) down the toilet, clean up litter, and wash your car in a car wash. This way, we can keep (surface water) clean together.

What do we do?

With its 15 sewage treatment plants, the water board is responsible for treating the wastewater from all households and businesses in North Holland above the North Sea Canal up to and including Texel. We ensure that the water that 1.4 million residents flush down the toilet and drain every day ends up cleaner in the ditch. We also do this for approximately 30,000 businesses in our area.

Watch our new video below to see how we purify micro-pollutants from wastewater.

What can you do?

Do you also think cleaner water is important? Then you can do your bit to help: don't flush rubbish down the drain, only flush the 3 Ps down the toilet (poop, pee, and toilet paper), and pick up litter before it ends up in the water. Want to know what else you can do?

Go directly to our tips!

But what actually happens when you flush the toilet or take a shower? The contaminated water ends up at one of our sewage treatment plants. In the video below, we show you how wastewater is treated at a sewage treatment plant (STP).
