Rain, wind and storms can lead to flooding or even inundation. That's why we reinforce, maintain and inspect our dikes and dunes. And we make sure that excess water can drain away as well as possible. You can also do something yourself. What do we do?
We work hard to reduce flooding and flooding. We strengthen, maintain and inspect our dikes and dunes. With our annual inspection, we make sure the ditches are clean and the water flows and drains properly. We construct water storage facilities to collect excess rainwater. We also give residents tips on what they can do themselves to prevent flooding.
To reduce the vulnerability of the storage basin system, a main water system of canals, west of Alkmaar, water storage facility Vliegveld Bergen will also be made suitable for the temporary storage of storage basin water.
To prevent flooding in the urban area of Castricum, Uitgeest and Limmen, measures are being taken. These measures ensure a better distribution of excess water over the agricultural area and an accelerated discharge in case of flooding.
The Spuisluis Oostoever in Den Helder, the Sassluis in Enkhuizen, the keersluis in Broekerhaven, the Grote Sluis in Hoorn and the Hornsluis, Noordersluis and Zuidersluis in Schardam (7 Artworks) were reinforced in 2021 and 2022.
What can you do?
You can do something yourself to prevent flooding:
- Remove tiles from your yard. Replacing tiles in your yard with greenery allows water to sink into the soil better in that area. This helps prevent flooding during downpours.
- Check on overflowik.nl to see how high the water will get at your home during a flood. Then think about what you will need when the time comes. And who/what will you take with you?
- Health for a clean gutter. A clogged gutter due to leaves or other debris, can cause flooding. Clean your gutters at least once a year.
- Health for a clean ditch if it borders your plot. The ditch must maintain the established width and depth for proper water supply and drainage.(https://www.hhnk.nl/slootonderhoud)
