Thirteen students from Han Fortmann (Trinitas College) in Heerhugowaard were inspired by the cloudy skies in the North Holland landscape as part of their exam assignment for the subject of Drawing. They set out in search of traditional Dutch cloudy skies above the polder, the sea, ditches, and lakes.

Types and sizes

Clouds are fascinating. For centuries, artists have been captivated by the beauty of these masses of tiny water droplets carried along by the wind. No two clouds are alike. We distinguish between all kinds of clouds, such as cumulus clouds, cauliflower clouds, fleecy clouds, and veil clouds.

Not only are clouds beautiful to look at, they also influence our lives. They bring shade, rain, hail, and snow, and they are the harbingers of storms and severe weather. Clouds are fascinating and sometimes even frightening. And so... worthy of painting!

Collaboration

This was the eighth time that the water board collaborated with Han Fortmann (Trinitas College) in Heerhugowaard. Each time, the water board sets a water-related exam assignment. The results are part of both a digital and a physical exhibition in our office. We are delighted with the result!

A jury consisting of representatives from the school and the water board selected the top three entries from the eight submissions. The public then chose the ultimate winner from these top three entries. The winner was Britt Denneman's entry.
