Autumn campaign

Together ready for water

Rain, wind, storms; autumn is a stormy season. With occasional flooding or, in the worst case, flooding. We reduce the chances of that by strengthening, maintaining and inspecting our dunes and dikes. And we mow the water plants so that the excess water can drain away through the ditches. With the annual inspection we check whether the waterways are really free. You can also prepare at home. A clean gutter prevents flooding. And keep an eye on the weather forecast to prepare for heavy weather. This way, together, we are ready for water!

Events

What do we all do?

The storm season lasts from Oct. 15 to April 15. This is a period with frequent rain and storms. Both in preparation and during this season, we work hard to reduce flooding and flooding. By dredging, mowing and the annual inspection, we ensure that the waterways remain wide enough, clean and that the water flows and is drained properly. We establish storage areas to temporarily store excess rainwater. And we reinforce, maintain and inspect our dikes and dunes.

What can you all do yourself?

You yourself can also do something in and around your home to prevent flooding, or be prepared for it:

  • Health for a clean gutter. A clogged gutter due to leaves or other debris, can cause flooding. Be sure to clean your gutter at least once a year.
  • Does your plot border a ditch? Then you are obliged to maintain it. You must keep the ditch at the specified width and depth. A clean ditch is necessary to allow water to be drained quickly to pumping stations during heavy precipitation. The third Monday of October starts the autumn inspection. Then we check if the ditch maintenance has been done properly. How to maintain your ditch? See the page Inspect.
  • Create a damming bulkhead. When it rains very heavily, there is a greater chance of flooding. Water can then flow into your home. With a water-resistant baffle you Health ensure that water cannot flow into the house. You place it in front of passages such as a door before flooding occurs. A bulkhead can be a tight-fitting board that fits precisely into your doorway.
  • Use sandbags. If flooding is imminent, you can place sandbags at openings such as a door. Also make use of baffles or plastic when doing this, otherwise the water will come through the sandbags.
  • Check on overflowik.co.uk how high the water rises at your home during a flood. Think about what you will need should it come to this (Who do you call in case of flooding? Is an emergency kit collection wise?).

  • Summer Campaign

In our summer campaign, we highlight the importance of good water quality and give tips on how you can contribute to it yourself.

"I experienced the Tuindorp Oostzaan flood in 1960. I was four at the time. I remember standing on the balcony of our house, above my father's store, and seeing the water rise very quickly. That was a very miserable thing to experience. If the dike breaches here in Hoorn, the water at our house is immediately very high as well. So good that the dike was reinforced."
