In the Mirror of Water

Fourteen VWO-6 students from Han Fortmann in Heerhugowaard created a work of art inspired byIn de Spiegel van het Water(In the Mirror of Water) as part of their art exam.

The students set out to explore their own surroundings. They discovered the water landscape at dawn and dusk. They searched for reflections in the water, reflective clouds, and vegetation. They incorporated the experiences they gained, captured in photos and sketches, into a work of art. Like artists throughout the ages, they were inspired by the beauty of the landscape. Everywhere they went, they encountered water and the mills and dikes that were built to control that water and, at the same time, to enjoy it.

Ode to the Landscape

The reason for choosing the water landscape as a subject is the theme year in 2021, Ode to the Landscape. Especially now, under the influence of COVID-19, we are increasingly exploring our own surroundings. And rediscovering their beauty. Water, in particular, is an integral part of the history of our country. Living with and fighting against water has shaped our country.

Collaboration

This is the fifth time that the water board has collaborated with Han Fortmann (Trinitas College) Heerhugowaard on an exhibition. A jury consisting of art teachers and subject matter experts from the water board selected a Top 3 from the fourteen entries. The public chose the final winner from these top three. The winner was Emma Kerkhofs' work.
